An Interfaith Look At Objections to Generative AI

When Pope Leo XIV released a statement about and generally against AI use the media talked about it, and people began thinking about religious objections to AI requirements on the job. Recently I’ve seen a Rabbi on social media discuss Jewish objections to AI, and I’ve also seen the same from Buddhist faith leaders. As someone who is interested in religion and culture (the focus of my masters degree), I thought I would take some time to look at many world religions and see what they had to say about AI use.

In this episode I examine paganism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. I will note that this is a high level overview. If what I’m talking about here interests you, I encourage you to do further research. I also admit that I have left out many more traditions than I ever could include, and so if you have additional thoughts you’d like to add, I encourage you to do so (respectfully of course).

One final note: I did not until late in this episode begin to describe the differences between generative AI and assistive AI, of which there are many. Since this ties into the nuanced discussions that we too often cannot have on social media, and into the discretion that many of the world’s faiths ask you to have around AI use, I will address it in the follow up episode. Thank you for understanding.

I’d love to hear from you. Reach out and contact me. Let me know how you fit in with my work and what you’d like to chat about. I’m happy to bring in new voices and perspectives, but just so you’re aware, I won’t promote anyone who is selling quick fixes, trying to exploit the communities I’m a part of, or who outright dismisses the work I’m doing. I’m a firm believer we have to stop putting silos around things and understand the glorious interplay between such things as our mental health, our well-being, living authentic and embodied, as well as some of the harms caused by a psychology practice that has for too long been centered in a cis, white, neurotypical, heterosexual frame.
